How to Find Your Design Style: Tips for Busy Professionals and Families

Creating a space that reflects your personality while meeting the demands of everyday life can feel overwhelming — especially if you're balancing a busy career or managing a bustling family with kids (and dogs!). But discovering your unique design style doesn't have to be complicated. Here are a few tips to make the process easier and more enjoyable:

1. Start with Inspiration (But Keep It Real)

Pinterest boards and design magazines are a great starting point, but it's easy to hit the point of inspiration overload. Start by saving images that immediately capture your attention without overthinking. The more you save, the more the algorithm will learn your style and suggest similar pictures. Once you have 10-15 images saved, review them holistically, looking for patterns — whether it's a love for clean lines, earthy textures, or pops of color.

Pro Tip: Ask yourself, "Could I actually live in this space?" If the answer is no, keep searching.

2. Consider Your Lifestyle First

A beautiful home should also be a functional one. Think about how you use each room:

- Do you need kid-friendly surfaces and pet-proof furniture?

- Do you entertain often, or is your home your personal retreat?

- Are you someone who loves the character and patina of natural materials, or would you rather your countertops or floors look brand-new as long as possible?

- How do you use your home? Do you enter through the garage with backpacks and sports bags, or through the front door? Shoes on or shoes off? What's your daily routine?

Choosing materials and layouts that fit your daily habits will naturally steer your design choices in a direction that works for you.

3. Identify Your Emotional Goals for the Space

Ask yourself how you want to feel when you walk into each room.

- Calm and serene? Opt for neutral tones, soft textures, and minimal clutter.

- Energized and inspired? Incorporate bold colors, vibrant patterns, and statement pieces.

- Moody and cozy? Lean towards muted tones in rich hues, and layer in plenty of texture for interest.

Design isn’t just about aesthetics—it's about creating a space that enhances your emotional well-being.

4. Incorporate Meaningful Elements

Your home should tell your story. Whether it’s art from a memorable trip, family heirlooms, or personal photos, adding meaningful elements creates a space that feels truly yours.

5. Work with a Designer Who Listens to You

A great designer will enhance your style, not impose their own. Look for someone who values collaboration and understands your practical needs and emotional goals for your space.

Finding your design style is a journey—and it’s one worth enjoying. By focusing on what matters most to you, your home will naturally become a reflection of your life, personality, and priorities.
